Maslow’s Heirarchy of Needs

Why is Maslow’s hierarchy important and how does it relate to health?
Maslow suggests that fulfilling basic needs first, those found at the bottom of the pyramid, is imperative to
improving other aspects of life. Health can suffer if these needs are not
met. Fulfilment of these basic needs are a prerequisite to good health. Check-out the pyramid steps and ask yourself if your basic human needs are being met.

5. Self Actualization (Focusing on personal growth)

4. Self Esteem (Respect and appreciation for personal accomplishments)

3. Love/Belonging (Family, Friendship, Romantic relationships, Community)

2. Safety (Health, Financial security, protection from accidents/injury)

1. Physiological (breathing, water, food, sleep, clothing, shelter)
